Visual Awareness Courses for Schools

1. Visual Awareness Courses for Schools Daisy UK can deliver visual and disability awareness through sport sessions for young people focusing on inclusion for all through presentation, demonstration and participation. Every child has the right to participate in sport and we offer a chance for children to become more aware of disability through the medium…

Currently over 10 million people in the UK are disabled. Therefore, a large percentage of households in the UK will have someone or is closely related to a person with a disability. Daisy UK (Disability Awareness Introducing Sport to Youngsters)'s concept has evolved out of a lack of understanding and awareness towards people with a disability. Daisy's ethos is that through sport and leisure and by using the medium of education, the barriers of discrimination can be broken down and sport can be played with an awareness of other people's ability, disability and feelings thus creating a more unselfish and caring society. The need for an organization such as Daisy UK, has been highlighted by the closure of special needs schools for children with a disability and the integration of these children into mainstream schools. Daisy aims to follow Governmental initiatives such as the Game Plan. An excellent way of achieving this is by targeting the young people of the society and educating them from school age and upwards. Through education, Daisy can alter the stereotypical thoughts and hopefully will endeavour to change people's preconceived beliefs and with a little imagination and adaptation, sport and leisure can be fun for all. Daisy wishes to prevent any conflict or bullying that may occur in the process of integrating children with any disability and mainstream school children in education by oral presentations, demonstrations and participation of disability awareness and introducing sport to young people by offering children, guardians and teachers an insight into the issues and needs of all young people thus building confidence and self esteem and being perceived in a more positive image. The government's Game Plan has highlighted obesity in young people as a major cause of concern and Daisy can confront this problem at grassroots level by giving all young people guidance and a pathway into sporting activities. This will benefit children with a disability, who may be more susceptible towards low fitness levels and obesity.

What can Daisy UK offer?

Daisy UK can offer both disability and visual awareness courses for children, teachers and guardians at schools, colleges and other organisations. A Daisy UK package consists of a presentation, demonstration and participation using sport as a medium of educating and fulfilling National Curriculum guidelines. The packages can be delivered to any group no matter how small or large in number. To optimise individual involvement, a group size of approximately 30 is preferable. But even with a larger or smaller group, the benefits including education and awareness of disability through sport are of great importance giving them a more knowledgeable understanding of these issues. The Daisy UK presentations (e.g. disability awareness and pathways to organised sport) are in the format of oral, PowerPoint and OHP. The contents of the presentations will consist of disability awareness to change the stereotypical beliefs that some people may have about disability. This will benefit the integration of children with a disability in mainstream schools. The second part of the service includes demonstrations of target sports. Target sports such as blind football, wheelchair basketball, goalball and many more, are demonstrated by experienced coaches. This will illustrate the skills, competence and competitiveness that people with a disability can achieve in sport. Finally, participation of the target sports undertaken by the group will be delivered. Both disabled and able bodied children would be allowed to participate together in these sports. This is done by adaptation and modification in the chosen sport. The aim of this, is to show that sport can be all inclusive, competitive and most of all fun. Daisy UK can offer quality service with all awareness courses performed professionally with a fun and educational delivery. We offer a great opportunity for all children and teachers to widen their knowledge about disability and sport.
